The
graceful curves of the female figure have been idealized
in stone and paint throughout history since the time of
the ancient Greeks. While feminine beauty is not solely
defined by any one part of the body, breasts that are proportionate
to a woman's physique give her form a balanced appearance.
Women who are not amply endowed because of a lack of normal
breast development may feel less feminine or attractive,
and this poor body image may erode self-confidence and self-esteem.
The same may be equally true of women experiencing a decrease
of breast volume following pregnancy or menopause. Whatever
the cause, the goal of breast augmentation is to give the
female patient fuller, more equally sized breasts without
disturbing their normal functioning. Under some circumstances,
augmentation is also an effective treatment for sagging
breasts (ptosis), a condition associated with aging, weight
loss or pregnancy.
