While
our public image is very important, just as important,
or more so, is our self image. How we feel about ourselves--our
abilities, our place in the scheme of things, etc.,
and, yes, our appearance. In a world that rewards good
looks, it is understandable that self concept is somewhat
connected to one's physical being.

While this may be the case, social science
tells us that, in general, self-esteem is not, and this
is indeed fortunate. So few of us are born with the human
perfection celebrated in fine paintings and sculpture. But
20th century medicine and technology have given us the tools
to redefine human anatomy in truly remarkable ways, and
access to those procedures is no longer the exclusive right
of the rich and/or famous. This year, more that 2 million
Americans, women and men, will make a decision about the
way they look and feel through cosmetic surgery. |
| Some
will do so to improve the form or contour of a part of their
face or body; others simply want to hold back the aging
process. Everyone just wants their outward appearance to
match their young and attractive inner self'. |
