Most of us suspected it is true without the studies. If it weren't, why would people, yes, men too, spend billions of dollars a year just to look better and/or younger. It is because of what people think about us, how they judge us, particularly without any other information to go on. Remember the old adage, "First impressions are lasting ones". That is probably a bit too simplistic. But a kernel of truth remains, and we all, particularly if facing an important first meeting, are anxious to look the best we can.

Because physically attractive people can be perceived as more confident, capable and persuasive, appearance can mean a lot to one's career and, hence, financial future. It is frequently the career issue that brings people to seek some surgical alteration. Men, more frequently, give career reasons for seeking the services of a cosmetic surgeon. But, women, particularly those in the public eye or in the boardroom, are increasingly having cosmetic surgery in order to appear more vital and energetic for job reasons. The secondary gain, of course, is the boost to self-confidence and ready to meet any challenge' look that can pay off in any setting. While our public image is very important, just as important, or more so, is our self image. How do we feel about ourselves--our abilities, our place in the scheme of things, etc., and, yes, our appearance. In a world that rewards good looks, it is understandable that self concept is somewhat connected to one's physical being. While this may be the case, social science tells us that, in general, self-esteem is not, and this is indeed fortunate. So few of us are born with the human perfection celebrated in fine paintings and sculpture. But 20th century medicine and technology have given us the tools to redefine human anatomy in truly remarkable ways, and access to those procedures is no longer the exclusive right of the rich and/or famous. This year, more that 2 million Americans, women and men, will make a decision about the way they look and feel through cosmetic surgery. Some will do so to improve the form or contour of a part of their face or body; others simply want to hold back the aging process. Everyone just wants their outward appearance to match their young and attractive inner 'self'.
